Professor dr. Md. Mahbubur Rahman (Mahabub) from Rajshahi University, Secretary of the BARM Society, is visiting the Netherlands at this moment. His program concentrates on a conference of the International Institute of Social History (IISH), Amsterdam. He is special guest of professor dr. H.W. van Schendel, head of the Asia Department of this IISH and expert on the history of Bangladesh. Part of Mahabub’s program in the Netherlands is visiting important Dutch Archival institutes like the City Archives of Amsterdam (the world’s largest Municipal Archives) and the Municipal Archives of Rotterdam. Furthermore Mahabub will be special guest in the meeting with the Dutch BARM group under the Association of South Holland Archivists (ASHA – KZHA: Kring van Zuid Hollandse Archivarissen, transl.) and the Solidarity Foundation Heemstede. The ASHA is supporting the BARMprogram in Bangladesh since 1999 in order to stimulate the archival development in Bangladesh. Monday 22 of december, the BARMgroup: Mrs. Els van den Bent, Mrs. Yvonne Bos-Rops, Mr. Theo Schelhaas, Mr. Sigfried Janzing and Mr. René Spork will show dr. Mahbubur Rahman the Municipal Archives of Rotterdam and discuss further proceedings of the BARM Society. Special attention will be given to the BARM Society’s Constitution, the working program and the planned BARM Seminar in Rajshahi in March 2009. Furthermore there will be discussions with dr. Fred van Kan, president of the Royal Association of Archivists in the Netherlands (KVAN, Koninklijke Vereniging van Archivarissen in Nederland, translat.). The KVAN is interested in cooperation with the BARM Society. Recently dr. Meena Gautam (deputy director of National Archives of India and director of the Indian School for Archival Studies) visited the Netherlands and was impressed about the quality of the National Archives in The Hague. Mr. Elias Miah, studying at the School for Archival Studies in Delhi since 6 November 2008 (a one year Diploma Course on Archives and Recordsmanagement, supported by the BARMgroup Netherlands) is making good progress. Our Dutch colleagues (archivists and historians) are delighted to meet Dr Mahbubur Rahman and are admiring his work in BARM, particularly as founder and director of the Heritage Archives in Rajshahi.

BARM Society to be launched 4 september 2008!

On September 4, the first meeting of the Steering Committee will take place, with invited guests, in order to launch the Bangladesh Archives & and Records Management Society. This is a result of the meeting of 26 july 2008 in Kuala Lumpur during the ICA Congress. Delegates of Bangladesh took the initiative in order to give the archival development of Bangladesh a boost. Mohammad Elias Miah, Muhammad Lutful Haq, Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman, Fazle Mir Ahmed Chowdhury, Sharifudin Ahmed, together with BARM coordinator Florus Geraedts, while participating in the ICA congress Archives, Governance and Development: mapping the future society, found that establishment of an Archival movement in Bangladesh is vital in order to work on archival development of Bangladesh. An association of persons in Bangladesh can bring the archives as crucial tool for efficient administration under the government’s attention. Furthermore, this organisation will help create awareness in the society about the importance of archives for developing  knowledge management and creating citizenship. Last but not least this society should point the general public’s attention to the threathning loss of the archival heritage of Bangladesh and East Bengal, revealing the neglected archives and presenting suggestions and plans for rescuing archives, on national and local level.
The Bangladesh Archives and Record Management Society will have its office in the Arts Building, University of Dhaka, C/o Room No.1084, Ramna, Dhaka 1000
