A short report of the celebration by Bangladesh Archives and Records Management Society (BARMS) of International Archives Day on 9 June.

BARMS has observed International Archives Day (IAD) on 9 June very successfully. The day began with releasing balloons carrying the message of IAD. Then we had a special meeting celebrating the event. The meeting was presided over by the Director of the National Archives Mr. Wadudul Bari Chowdhury. The Chief Guest was the Secretary of the Ministry of Culture Dr. Ranjit Kumar Biswas, NDC, and Special Guest was Professor Dr. Sharif uddin Ahmed, President of Bangladesh Archives and Records Management Society. This year the theme of the IAD in Bangladesh was “Digital Archives for
the next generation in Bangladesh”. Dr. Sharif in his speech elaborated on the significance of the Day and its worldwide celebration. He also talked about the progress of the archival movement in Bangladesh and the steady development of the National Archives of Bangladesh. He reminded the audience that the government of Bangladesh is keen to establish Digital Archives in the country. Dr. Ranjit in his speech expressed that the government would provide all the facilities for Archives in Bangladesh to develop quickly and play their important role in the good governance of the country and its socio-economic developments. Mr. Wadudul Bari assured that he would do his best so that the National Archives of Bangladesh become a digital archive, pointing out that the process has already started. He asked the audience to come forward to help the Archives and consider it as their own institution. A large number of professional people, university students and journalists
attended the meeting.

Report of visit of Elias Kanchon, member of Friends of Archives Bangladesh (FAB) / Bangladesh Archives & Records Management Society (BARMS), to Bogra & Dinajpur on behalf of Archives and Records Management (ARM) and Right to Information (RTI).

I started my visit on 1 June 2014 departing at 06.45 from Uttara, Dhaka, to Bogra by Bus (TR Travels). I arrived at Bogra at about 13:00 pm. I stayed with my FAB friends Galib and his brother Pavel Rahman. They received me and after that we continued towards Shibganj Upzila, Bogra District. That is some 30 km to the northwest of Bogra.

Visit Bogra.
1. Nearby Galibs place I met with Pavel and his friends and a big group working on Archives & Records Management & Right to Information. The group leaders are GALIB and Asadujaman Pavel. They are much interested in the work of FAB / BARMS.


2. Second of June I visited Mohasthangor (মহাস্থানগড়),one of the earliest urban archaeological sites so far discovered in Bangladesh, containing the remains of an ancient city which was called Pundranagara. I also collected some historical information.


3. Visit to Government Azizul Haque College in Bogra ( This is a public college under the National University of Bangladesh. It is one of the largest educational institutions in Bangladesh’s northern region. One of our members from Haque College is Shahinur Rahman (Suboj). He’s also Leader of TEER (TEAM FOR ENERGY & ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH). There’s very much interest among the members in working for FAB & BARMS. I distributed the ICA publication in Bengal on The Records of NGO’s. Memory to be shared, a practical guide in 60 questions. The members are: Md. Sajedul Haque, Md. Polash Hossin, Rajia Sultana, Moslama Akter (Fanchi), Md. Arafat Hossin, Md. Kamrujjaman Mondol, Md. Mijanur Rahman, Kademul Islam and Maruf Ahamed. I gave lecture on ARM / RTI from 11.00 till 12.55 pm and some 50 students attended of this College attended this lecture. They asked questions about What are archives? How to use archives? Who are the users of Archives? How someone can apply for RTI 2009? I gave them many suggestions how to benefit from RTI and archives.

4. Meeting with Md. Anisujjaman (Suboj ), assistant senior accounts officer of Agrani Bank Ltd. He expressed to me his interest in ARM but finding out how to give his practical support. I gave him the publication on The Records of NGO’s.

5. Meeting with BARMS members Ikbal – financial Secretary at Bogra municipality. He is very happy for with archives management activities. Some improvements on record keeping and record rooms are made. After that I visited our active member Sitol Kumer & Tusher House in Kaipara Bogra.

Visit Dinajpur.

6. Visit to Zia Hard Foundation (ZHF) in Dinajpur. I met with IT expert of the hospital Mr. Minnat. He’s a very active member of BARMS and FAB. I gave him our NGO book. He showed me his own historical archives with the name Minnat-Archives. He has big interest in BANGLADESHI HISTORY. I also collected historical documents. We discussed how we can develop our ARM. He is now trying to develop in his own area ARM projects with students, teachers and FAB / BARMS groups. I visited totally 3 groups which started working for the developed of our ARM.

Summary of the results:
– Shibganj Galib & Pavel groups are working now for Archives & Record Management and Application for Right To Information (Shibganj Upazila).
– Government Azizul Haque College new groups with TEER Organizations. All member are students & teachers.
– Agrani Bank Officers add our ARM project
– Dinajpur ZHF Mr. Minnat suggestions for development of archives; also digital archives & E-mail
– Collection of old documents & records before 1971 (Freedom Fighting) and before 1900.
