Brief report by professor Sharif uddin Ahmed on the Training of the Bangladesh National Museum Personnel given by Bangladesh Archives and Records Management Society (BARMS)

A three days training programme of the Bangladesh National Museum Personnel on Management of Archives was carried out by Bangladesh Archives & Records Management Society (BARMS) officials from 27 April 2013 – 29 April 2013 at Shahbagh, Dhaka. The training programme was carried out in connection with the newly established Archives of the National Museum. Twenty – three senior staff of the National Museum took part in the training and there were some practical classes as well. Professor Sharif uddin Ahmed (Dhaka University), Professor Mezbah-ul Islam (Dhaka University), Mr. Elias Miah (archivist at NAB) and Mr. Akbar Ali (archivist at NAB), all members of BARMS, conducted the training programme. The following subjects were discussed at the training:

  1. Introduction of Foundation Training (Professor Ahmed)
  2. Archives  Library and Museum  (Professor Islam)
  3. Building up of an Archives (Mr. Akbar)
  4. Finding Aids (Mr. Miah)
  5. Preservation and Conservation of Records (Mr. Akbar)
  6. Security Measures (Mr. Miah)
  7. Hazards and Threats of Archives (Mr. Akbar)
  8. ICT in the field of Archives and Records Mangement (Professor Islam)
  9. Social and Cultural Role  of Archives (Professor Ahmed)

The training programme was inaugurated by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Bangladesh National Museum, Mr. Azizur Rahman, former Secretary of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. The inaugural function was also addressed by Mr. Prokash Chandra Das, the Director General of the National Museum, Professor Sharif uddin Ahmed, President, BARMS and Professor Mezbah-ul Islam, Member, Executive Committee, BARMS.

The training programme was very lively, and the trainers and the trainees interacted very well. Power –point presentation of the lectures was very pertinent and was much appreciated by the trainees. During the training, visits were made to the Museum Record Room and the Conservation Laboratory where some practical classes were held.

On the concluding day BARMS officials including the President and the General Secretary Mr. Jalal Ahmed spoke and thanked the Museum authority for organizing the training and expressed the desire for future cooperation between the Museum and BARMS. The trainees will be given certificates at a specially organized function. For BARMS the whole exercise was very fruitful and a great success.
