The new National Archives building

This is the new National Archives building of Bangladesh. It was officially opened on the 10th of June by Mr. Abul Kalam Azad, honourable Minister, Ministry of Information and Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. Mr. Promod Mankin, honourable state Minister, Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh was also present. Ceremony was attended by secretary, chief of the institutions, high officials, journalists and distinguished persons, as members of the board of Bangladesh Archives and Records Management Society. It seems that along with the completion of the new archives building, records management in the Bangladesh public sector will be boosted to a higher profile. There are some hopeful signs indicating this:

  1. Expansion of manpower of the National Archives (NA), which is already submitted by the Archives Authority in the wake of the completion of the new building, will help NA to play its role in providing advice and guidance on the management of records in the future;
  2. A letter was sent to the entire secretary and the chief of the organization for proper preservation of their records and to transfer old records for permanent preservation to the NA after 25 years as prescribed in the National Archives Ordinance;
  3. Talkings with country chief of the UNDP for allotment of fund for better management of archival materials & records.

Staff of National Archives is very hopeful some 56 employees for NA will soon be effectuated.
