Friday 28 of Februari, Florus and I were welcomed by mayor Khairuzzaman Liton of Rajshahi City Corporation at his office to speak about the reconstruction of the Dutch Silk Factory Boro Kuthi (17th century) and the need of technical expertise from abroad (architects, constructors). Mayor Khairuzzaman wants to create in this historic building a Dutch-Bengal heritage centre and tourist spot alongside the Padma River (Ganges). Present were too Lt. Col. Md. Lutful Haq and Mj. Ferdous Rana. Our advice was to start with a smal scale reconstruction of most urgent parts, with garden rehabilitation and tearing down of modern defence wall. Seek local, regional and national commitment, inform potential partners (Embassies of the Netherlands and Brittain, ICOMOS, Erfgoed Nederland, Unesco, Heritage Group of Chincura West Bengal e.s.o.) on progresses and organize little events on this spot to show local polulation the progresses of reconstruction and rehabilitation. Further more write a masterplan and plan for exploitation of Boro Kuthi as museum, conference centre, promenade garden with hotel and restaurant, and start a two years research about the history of this Dutch building: in Bangladesh (Rajshahi DCRR, RCC-archives and NAB), UK (India Office and Brittish Library) and Netherlands (VOC-archives, National Archives). This will create growing awareness among population, decissionmakers and potential partners for big scale reconstruction. ICOMOS-NL has shown interest in delivering expertise for reconstruction.

Indeed a beautiful location of historical importance. ‘Small scale reconstruction’ sounds as a good start.
