Professor dr. Md. Mahbubur Rahman (Mahabub) from Rajshahi University, Secretary of the BARM Society, is visiting the Netherlands at this moment. His program concentrates on a conference of the International Institute of Social History (IISH), Amsterdam. He is special guest of professor dr. H.W. van Schendel, head of the Asia Department of this IISH and expert on the history of Bangladesh. Part of Mahabub’s program in the Netherlands is visiting important Dutch Archival institutes like the City Archives of Amsterdam (the world’s largest Municipal Archives) and the Municipal Archives of Rotterdam. Furthermore Mahabub will be special guest in the meeting with the Dutch BARM group under the Association of South Holland Archivists (ASHA – KZHA: Kring van Zuid Hollandse Archivarissen, transl.) and the Solidarity Foundation Heemstede. The ASHA is supporting the BARMprogram in Bangladesh since 1999 in order to stimulate the archival development in Bangladesh. Monday 22 of december, the BARMgroup: Mrs. Els van den Bent, Mrs. Yvonne Bos-Rops, Mr. Theo Schelhaas, Mr. Sigfried Janzing and Mr. René Spork will show dr. Mahbubur Rahman the Municipal Archives of Rotterdam and discuss further proceedings of the BARM Society. Special attention will be given to the BARM Society’s Constitution, the working program and the planned BARM Seminar in Rajshahi in March 2009. Furthermore there will be discussions with dr. Fred van Kan, president of the Royal Association of Archivists in the Netherlands (KVAN, Koninklijke Vereniging van Archivarissen in Nederland, translat.). The KVAN is interested in cooperation with the BARM Society. Recently dr. Meena Gautam (deputy director of National Archives of India and director of the Indian School for Archival Studies) visited the Netherlands and was impressed about the quality of the National Archives in The Hague. Mr. Elias Miah, studying at the School for Archival Studies in Delhi since 6 November 2008 (a one year Diploma Course on Archives and Recordsmanagement, supported by the BARMgroup Netherlands) is making good progress. Our Dutch colleagues (archivists and historians) are delighted to meet Dr Mahbubur Rahman and are admiring his work in BARM, particularly as founder and director of the Heritage Archives in Rajshahi.
